Kazrog has released a new version of their popular speaker simulation software and Toby Pitman puts his foot down in this in-depth test drive.
ReCabinet by Kazrog LLC was initially released as a collection of Impulse Responses that emulated various speaker cabinets. The library was quite extensive with each cabinet sampled with a variety of mics in various positions. The only drawback was these had to be loaded into a convolution engine like Space Designer or SIR.
This made auditioning Impulses a rather laborious process especially in Logic Pro's Space Designer. The release of ReCabinet 3 has seen this impulse library built into a dedicated plugin which comes in VST, RTAS and AU formats. Things have been a bit rocky on the Mac with some GUI issues but the latest release seems to be working pretty well on OS X Lion.

The interface is very simple to use and you're up and running in seconds.
There are plenty of cabs to choose from: 4x12s, 2x12s, Combos and Bass cabs.
There’s a nice selection of mics too that can be placed on or off axis in near, mid and far positions.
The results are pretty darn good and these impulses are a lot more realistic than some dedicated software which can tend to be a bit flattering and lifeless. The only drawback so far is that you can’t pan the two available cabs separately which is a shame and should be really simple to implement, so you’ll need two instances fed from a bus if you want a split stereo cab setup.
You can use ReCabinet as a replacement for any type of speaker simulator built into any Amp Modeling software or hardware. You could, for example, run a POD into your DAW with the speaker sim turned off and use ReCabinet as an insert effect to shape your tone further.
You can even use it as a replacement for a speaker in a real amp. I should note it’s a really bad idea to unplug the speaker from an amp as it needs the load. You can damage the amp by doing this!! If you want to do this you’ll need a load box like a THD Hot Plate. You can however run any dedicated recording preamp into your DAW.
Here I have a Mesa Boogie 5:25 Express...
...I’ve simply run a lead from the FX send into the front of my MOTU 828 Mk3.
Here’s that signal using the clean channel into a couple of cabs in ReCabinet.
With a bit of compression and a tight room reverb the results are very usable!
Here’s the Burn channel from the 5:25 into another combination of speakers.
And now with some compression and reverb! Pretty meaty!
You can obviously try ReCabinet after any amp modeling plugins you have by disabling the cab in the plugin and opening ReCabinet after it.
For $99 ReCabinet is a very good buy and will keep you busy for a while! Upgrades from $39 from ReCabinet 2 is a no brainer. If you like tinkering with guitar sounds or any kind of sounds through an amp ReCabinet could be the plugin for you.
